The Tugela is Draken Watches first watch, drawing inspiration from the area in South Africa known as the Drakensberg. The case has a distinct shape, tapering outwards and upwards, with long deep teeth on the bezel. The indices on the dial are inspired by the shapes used in Zulu beadwork, the the case back pictures the images of the Drakensberg mountains, with the Tugela river in the foreground. The Draken Tugela features an automatic movement, with 300m water resistance. Longevity of the watch is improved with the use of Viton gaskets.

You have the choice of 3 different colour leather straps, plus a matching nylon strap for when you need to hit the water, or more extreme outdoor activities. The straps feature quick release pins, making it a breeze to swap the strap.

The Tugela comes in a black leather travel case – perfect for storing the watch when not on the wrist.

More than the sum of its parts. I was late to the game of the Tugela watch as I bought mine over a year after the Kickstarter campaign. Shipping from Auckland, New Zealand to Luxembourg, Europe was fast. Contact with the seller was nice and friendly. The packaging is top notch as the watch comes in a nice leather case with the Tugela on the leather strap, the Zulu strap, a few spare quick release pins, a credit card sized warranty card and instruction manual and, to top it off, a personal note from Mike, the owner of Draken Watches. Try to get the latter with an Omega, Rolex or Breitling. At 42mm the watch is of a nice size that should fit almost anybody. The fit and finish of the thing punches way above its price point. For example the 120-click unidirectional bezel has a really satisfying feel to it with no play whatsoever and the crispest sound this side of breaking glass. Lume is amply applied and lasts through the night except for the date, but hey, look at the size of the font. There’s only so much C3 that can be applied. And how many watches are out there with a lumed date in the first place? The clasp of the leather strap is of the same great quality and finish than the watch itself. The Zulu strap too is a quality item. Overall this is a great product that fits well in the category of things where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Lupo
